While I'm not wanting to start any negative discussion over sex, I'm assuming this little guy is a male because of the coloring on his back. I very well may be wrong so please feel free to correct me.
So here's what happened. My wife was out on our deck and this little guy flew up to her and hovered about three feet in front of her face.... just looking at her. She moved her hand a little to get my attention as I just happened to be looking out the door. I ran to get my camera which luckily had my 100-400 lens already attached. He flew to the flowers and started eating as I fumbled for the correct settings. I used Shutter priority at 1000/second. I wanted to get a little wing blur. Everything else was in auto, but with my lens, I was at 5.6 aperture at 320mm and the ISO ended up being automatically set at 640. I set the shutter to high speed, aimed and fired. Well, apparently he didn't like the sound and flew off.
I sat down and waited for about 10 minutes and back he came. This time, he was either confident I wasn't going to hurt him, or he was too hungry to care because I started shooting multiple frames per second and he just kept going from flower to flower. At one point he even turned his back to me... you won't see those shots... sorry. Even with spot metering I had to lighten him up a bit in post. I also added a bit of clarity to bring out the mid tone contrast and increased the vibrance to make his back show up a little better.
